I qualified in 1976 from the Northern Ireland College of Occupational
Therapy and spent my first five years gaining experience in General Medicine and Surgery,
Neurosciences and Paediatrics.
From 1981 I was Senior I Occupational Therapist in charge of providing services to the
Neurosciences Directorate in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. In 1986 I worked as a Senior
Neuro-therapist in the Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, USA, developing a particular interest in
the rehabilitation of head injured patients, including children, counselling and training and
education of OT and other professional staff. I later worked in the Joss Cardwell Centre in
Belfast in the rehabilitation of neurological patients, including those with traumatic brain
injury. I was then a Senior I Occupational Therapist in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick
Children, involved with managing children with neurological problems, including head injury.
I joined reach as a Programme Manager in 2001.
