EF, then aged 8, was involved in a road traffic
accident as a pedestrian and sustained a severe head injury. Her
mother was also injured in the accident. One year later reach was
approached by the insurer to carry out a home-based rehabilitation
assessment, due to the continuing needs presented by the claimant.
The initial focus for the reach programme was
to discuss progress and areas of difficulty in terms of her education.
As a result, there was close liaison with the educational department
and the special needs co-ordinator. The specific learning needs
and consequent appropriate rehabilitation approaches were identified
and a continuity of approach was established between home and school.
Therapy sessions focussed on memory strategies, concentration skills,
behavioural techniques and maximising her functional bilateral skills
while at school but also in the home and social environment.
Rehabilitation enabled EF to learn and maintain
her new coping strategies and progress to matching her peers in
the classroom and also to control her behavioural outbursts within
the home. Rehabilitation was a very positive
experience for the claimant and the family.
A high quality and cost-effective service that
delivers one-to-one personal programmes, faster rehabilitation and
a reduced financial burden...
